Normal urine color ranges from pale yellow to deep amber - the result of a pigment called urochrome.

Urochrome is a pigment that is one of the causes of the yellow color in urine. It is a breakdown product of the blood's hemoglobin and is removed by the kidneys. Depending on the amount of Urochome the urine might be darker. B vitamins turn urine an eye-popping neon yellow. Carrot juice can tint it orange. And porphyria, a disease that affects your skin and nervous system, earned its reputation - and its name - by turning urine the color of port wine. Most changes in urine color are harmless and temporary - the result of certain foods, dyes, supplements or prescription drugs. Occasionally, though, unusual urine color can indicate an infection or serious illness.

Dirty urine is urine that has been contaminated outside of the urethra. Dirty urine samples can be prevented by using a clean catch method of collection or a catheter.
