There are many types of hallucinogenic drugs. There are several categories of hallucinogen. The three main categories of hallucinogenic drugs are the psychedelics, dissociatives and deliriants. Some famous psychedelics include LSD-25, Psilocybin, Mescaline, DMT, 2C-B and Cannabis. Some famous dissociatives include Ketamine, Dextromethorphan, Nitrous Oxide and PCP. Famous deliriants include Atropine, Scopolamine and Diphenhydramine. The psychedelic hallucinogens mostly work by affecting serotonin receptors in the brain. Dissociatives affect NMDA, Dopamine, and/or Opioid receptors. Deliriants typically affect Acetylcholine. Each of these three categories has many, many known drugs in it and there will be more discovered in the future. Some occur naturally in nature, some are created synthetically, others are modified from their natural form to become semi-synthetic. In addition, each category of hallucinogen contains drugs with distinctly different effects than the drugs from another category. Additionally, drugs of the same category can have different effects.
