All the steroid hormones exert their action by passing through the plasma membrane and binding to intracellular receptors. The mechanism of action of the thyroid hormones is similar; they interact with intracellular receptors. Both the steroid and thyroid hormone-receptor complexes exert their action by binding to specific nucleotide sequences in the DNA of responsive genes. These DNA sequences are identified as hormone response elements, HREs. The interaction of steroid-receptor complexes with DNA leads to altered rates of transcription of the associated genes.

There is no single answer to this as each hormone does different things and there are many different hormones, some of which are active throughout our lives and others are active only at certain periods of time and then quit being made. Some hormones are even multipurpose, have one function as a hormone and an entirely different nonhormonal function.

Just a few hormones...

  • human growth hormone, assists growth in childhood then at much lower levels later in life has a nonhormonal function in wound healing, etc.
  • estrogen and progesterone, causes development of female features and controls menstrual cycle and pregnancy
  • testosterone, causes development of male features and at low levels in both males and females triggers sexual feeling
  • oxytocin, encourages mother and baby bonding and also believed to participate in the process of "falling in love" in both males and females during courtship.
  • epinephrine, has many functions and effects both hormonal and nonhormonal.
  • etc.
