A difficult relationship can come from a lot of different things such as not getting along, no trust, no communication, no real love is present but one or both feels that they need to stay in the relationship for children possibly, you cannot be together due to military duty - separation by work responsibilities, etc. A difficult relationship can arise from something like maybe two people really love each other and want to be together but cannot because of geographical locations that cannot be resolved right away - they can become quite miserable from missing their loved one and that can be very, very difficult too.
