Early smoking was triggered by advertisements. Advertisements made people think that smoking made them look cool, it targeted young adults and sold cigarettes like beer is being sold today. After people were hooked, they no longer smoked to be cool, they smoked because they were addicted to them. In today's society some people still believe smoking to be cool, but this doesn't happen as much as it did back then because advertisements no longer sell their products like beer today is.
