A viral illness is more difficult to treat with medicines, such as antibiotics, because viruses use the cell's wall to replicate. Thus if you attempt to destroy the virus you can destroy the cell as well. In most cases, but not all, rest, fluids and time if the best way to conquer a common viral illness. Tylenol or Motrin can help with any fever, aches and pains.

A bit more:

Depending on the type of virus it is, an antiviral may help. There are many different types of viruses, some of which respond very well to anti viral medications, but a few which don't. But only a doctor can diagnose what type of viral infection you have and prescribe the proper medication.
