The 'MR' in the title of the 1 gram/1000mg capsule means modified release, i.e. the drug disperses slowly over time to release the active ingredient gradually through the day.

The 500mg separate dosage tablets are immediate release, and the drug enters your bloodstream within minutes of taking each dose, so there are peaks and troughs of concentration of the drug in your blood.

Obviously, having a slow release and the drug being introduced into your bloodstream throughout the day is a better way to manage your blood sugar/Diabetes, as well as less invasive to your stomach.

What else does METformin do besides lower glucose levels?

Metformin is thought to make the body more sensitive to insulin, so that there is less need to overproduce your own insulin. How it does this is not really known. Metformin also is thought to reduce gluconeogenesis, the process whereby your liver can synthesize glucose. It's principal mechanism is to make the body use existing insulin more efficiently, which does result in lower glucose levels for type II diabetics. However, Metformin is being studied as a Caloric Restriction mimetic in normal people. In this case, glucose levels would not necessarily be lowered, however insulin secretion will be lowered. Caloric restriction is the process of slowing aging through reduced energy intake. Some of the markers of this include reduced serum insulin levels. Since this is the purpose of Metformin, studies are underway to see if metformin slows aging. Research on nematodes and rats shows metformin does increase lifespan in these animals. Metformin can cause lactic acidosis in patients with poor renal function.

Why Metformin Is Sickening?

Metformin is a prescription drug used to treat type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of medications called biguanides. People with type 2 diabetes have blood sugar (glucose) levels that rise higher than normal. Metformin doesn’t cure diabetes. Instead, it helps lower your blood sugar levels to a safe range. Metformin is also often prescribed off-label to treat polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), but it isn’t currently FDA-approved for this use. Metformin can cause mild and serious side effects. Most side effects are mild and primarily affect your digestive system. Severe side effects such as lactic acidosis are less common but require prompt medical attention. Here’s what you need to know about metformin side effects and when you should call your doctor. you can check my link in bio

Has anyone had problems with Zydus brand Metformin?

I am having problems with Zydus brand Metformin. I had been on Metformin by teva until recently when my insurance changed my drug company to Medco. I got the Metformin by Zydus. They did not work. My blood sugar went up and I started to have other symptoms. Since I had about 20 pills by teva left, I went back on that. Sure enough my blood sugar became normal again. So, I call Medco pharmacist and I was told to get my doctor to prescribe Metformin and specify that the generics have to come from teva. I also got 1 month supply from the Brand name, the original one, not generic. I am mailing the prescription and see what happens. I will keep you posted. Good luck! E. in Chicago
