What is the difference between the two drugs amoxicillin and amoxycillin?

Ampicillin is a semi-synthetic antibiotic and penicillin is a natural antibiotic. Either of these can prescribed in liquid or pill form and both are effective for treating bacterial infections.

They are both lactam containing antibiotics, like penicillin, but they differ in the size of the R groups attached to the alpha site of the lactam ring. The larger R group on cloxicillin keeps beta-lactamase from attaching, making it a superior antibiotic to amoxicillin, which is very susceptible to beta-lactamase, in the absence of a beta-lactamase inhibitor such as clavulanic acid. To my knowledge, cloxicillin is not widely used in medicine. This is due to broader spectrum antibiotics taking its place, such as vancomycin.
