Macrodantin is all macrocrystalline nitrofurantoin while Macrobid is a combination of the macrocrystalline nitrofurantoin as well as the nitrofurantoin monohydrate form (25% and 75% respectively). The monohydrate form has a faster rate of dissolution and absorption compared to the macrocrystilline form, and is contained within a powder blend which, upon exposure to gastric and intestinal fluids, forms a gel matrix that releases nitrofurantoin over time.
