You could have hand tendinitis. If you have been using hand and fingers more than normal, i.e. guitar playing, knitting, gardening, etc., this could have brought on symptoms. Treatment consists of resting the hand and using ice for 3 days, then moist heat for a couple of days, along with ibuprofen, and stretching the hand and fingers often helps.

If symptoms continue despite treatment and you are having numbness, aching, etc., in first three fingers or the thumb (esp. at night,) you may have carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).

Repetitive activities of the hand may cause CTS in some people, but other things like Diabetes, hypothyroidism, obesity etc., can also be risk factors for getting CTS and would need to be checked out.

The main concern if someone is having finger cramps is the early onset of Arthritis. It could also be something more simple due to overworking your hands one day or it could be a sign of being dehydrated.
