According to the CDC, the most common cause of death in the elderly is injuries related to falls. At least one in three elderly people age 65 and older, fall every year.

As of December 2011 the most recent year for which we have complete data is 2006. The March 10,2010, national Vital Statistics Reports lists as causes of death for those over 65 (in order):

1) Heart disease (29%)

2) Cancer (22%)

3) Cerebrovascular disease (stroke)(6.7%)

4) Respiratory disease (COPD, Influenza, pneumonia) (6.1%)

5) Alzheimer's (4%)
