Ribavirin is an anti-viral drug indicated for severe RSV (Human respiratory syncytial virus) infection, hepatitis C infection and other viral infections. Ribavirin is a prodrug, which when metabolised resembles purine RNA nucleotides. In this form it interferes with RNA metabolism required for viral replication.

What is mechanism of action of ribavirin?

Ribavirin’s mechanism of action is not fully understood, but it is believed to inhibit the replication of RNA and DNA viruses by interfering with their genetic material. It may disrupt viral RNA synthesis and impair viral mRNA capping. Ribavirin has also been shown to have immunomodulatory effects, such as enhancing the activity of natural killer cells.

Are there possible long term mental health consequences associated with interferon - ribavirin combination therapy for hepatitis C?

I'm not 100% sure about long term, I would guess your mood would return to normal once meds are stopped. while on it you need to be under the care of a pscyh In response to above post: I was the first person to be treated in Washington state with Interferon, and was retreated 10 years later with combo Interferon-Ribavirin therapy. After nearly dieing from the Ribavirin combo I have suffered from many debilitating side effects. I have just been told that my immune system has gone after my body like an autoimmune syndrome. It has attacked my bones, Thyroid and other systems. I have suffered from deep depression for over 12 years now. It's better then being dead, meds control pain and depression.

How is hepatitis C treated and can hepatitis C be cured?

Hepatitis C is commonly treated with weekly injections of pegylated interferon alfa and a capsule of Ribavirin given twice daily. Interferon injections boost the immune system to attack liver cells infected with the hepatitis C virus and also inhibits viral replication. Ribavirin capsules inhibit the replication and infectivity of the hepatitis C virus. The treatment for Hepatitis C typically lasts 24-48 weeks. Hepatitis C is curable in more than 50% of patients, but a various number of factors influence the likelihood of a patient responding to treatment. Those factors are: strain of virus, gender, weight, viral load, age, and the extent of scarring in the liver.
