Levalbuterol is the generic name for the brand name drug, Xopenex. Xopenex is a short acting beta-2 agonist used for acute Asthma symptoms. It is similar to the drug albuterol, which is a mixture of active and inactive molecules. Unlike albuterol, Xopenex is 100% of the active form of the drug, and the manufacture states that the benefit of this is less undesirable side effects than albuterol (such as a racing heart) and more effective. However, this has been highly debated in the medical community. Many clinicians consider the two drugs to have similar adverse effect profiles and equal in efficacy.
