A communal relationship is one in which the requirements for survival are provided by a group rather than by the individual. In the animal kingdom, many species live in communal relationships. Individuals in the group rely on each other to provide protection, emotional security, leadership and nurturing of the young. Large animals like elephants and the great apes, small animals like Meerkats and even insects like ants and termites live in communities of closely related individuals.

In the 1970's, Hippies experimented with communal living. Property, earnings, sex, drugs and "Rock and Roll" were shared freely among the members. Most communes failed in the end. The success of communal living relies heavily on each member's desire to put the needs of community first, ahead of their own. This was, and still is, the basic premise of the "Communist Party".
