Two things hold the trachea open
1. air pressure
2. Cartilidge rings that the trachea is made of catilaginous rings.
If a patient has had a tracheostomy and the cannula (the plastic device that keeps the trachea open) is removed, the area is covered with gauze and will close on its own in time.
Hope this helps

The trachea is always opened in order for the air to get into the lungs. However, when there is food in the pharynx, a flap of skin called the epiglottis will cover the trachea, so the food won't get into the lungs.
epiglottis
Rings of cartilage.
The trachea.
the trachea is held open by rings of cartilages
trachea has cartilage rings which it open all the time
The trachea is made of C shaped rings of cartilage, this maintains the shape of the trachea.
the cartilage is important because it open trachea all the time.
To hold something permanently open (such as the trachea, which is held open for breathing by rings of cartilage).
cartilage rings provides support to the trachea that why it open all the time
They are to keep the trachea patent (open) even with low intratracheal air pressures

What keeps the trachea open are small cartilage ring, called cricoid cartilage.
