You body uses magnesium apparently in the uptake of calcium. A deficiency in magnesium would likely result in a deficiency in calcium so possible weakening of the bones and connective tissues in joints. Outside of the uptake of calcium I am not aware of other uses of magnesium is the human body but with other mineral deficiencies can trigger swollen abdomens, chronic fatigue, hair loss, all of which appear to be common side effective to mineral deficiencies. In an severe cases organ failure and death may also be possible.

A magnesium test checks the level of magnesium in the blood. Magnesium is an important electrolyte needed for proper muscle, nerve, and enzyme function. It also helps the body make and use energy and is needed to move other electrolytes (potassium and sodium) into and out of cells. To maintain this normal blood glucose level, the pancreatic cells will secrete glucagon which stimulates the body to convert stored glycogen into glucose. There won't be any insulin secreted as insulin is only secreted when the blood glucose level increases beyond its normal level (for example, after a meal).

All liquid supplements are more easily absorbed by the body, so liquid calcium would be more likely to be utilized by the body instead of just passing through as frequently happens with regular calcium supplements. In order for calcium to work, it needs magnesium, so liquid magnesium would also be better absorbed by the body so that it can be utilized optimally.
