You get bitter. And the more you go on by your own, the more difficult it becomes for you to open your heart, completely. You may eventually find someone with whom share part of you, but having lived as a single for many years, you will be drown to make huge selfish, egocentric and, why not, childish mistakes. It would require a great maturity to put things in the right place (without severe wounds on the other side). I don't know if you're talking about someone you know... In any case, a woman would avoid having a serious relationship for pure fear - for instance, if she had a very bad experience with the other gender, in her past (not necessarily a 'love relationship'), something so terrible that she feels uncomfortable revealing, something that taught her it's best to be alone than to face the uncertain future. A man would probably avoid having a serious relationship with a woman for more practical reasons, like his career - it may happens he never gets to feel the need for love if his sexual life is acceptable (from his POV). If you're talking about yourself... Start working on the 'learning' issue. There are lots of books that talk about the differences between men and women, and they do it in an easy-to-read manner. And while you learn, ponder and memorize, remember that you might just turn the corner one day and find that someone you have never looked for. Be prepared, that's all. Good Luck.
