The complete inability to urinate is called anurea, and is a serious medical condition. There are many different things that could cause you this problem, they all need prompt evaluation by a doctor.

If you've had any recent pain or rash, it could be an infection or a stone. If your bladder feels full and you can't pee, it's worth calling your health care provider for advice on whether to come into the office or visit the emergency room.

Whether male or female, urinary infection is the most common reason for the inability to empty the urinary bladder. If you have an untreated urinary infection, you can have any of these symptoms:

  • frequency - desire to go urinate more often
  • hesitancy - urine does not start immediately
  • partial retention - feeling you have not emptied the bladder
  • bladder spasms - before, during, or after urinating, with or without pain
  • burning or pain when urine comes out, usually pain or burning in the tube called the urethra
  • pelvic pain - pain in the bladder felt above the pelvic bone in the lower abdomen, center area (not sides)
  • flank pain - your "flank" is your sides above the hip bone - IF the infection involves the kidneys
  • full retention - inability to start the flow of urine at all or only drops come out -- this is a serious sign and you must go see a doctor
  • bleeding with or after urinating
  • blood in the urine, or very dark-reddish urine

If you cannot begin to urinate, you need to see a doctor or go to the ER. They will catheterize you, IF necessary and determine the cause of the difficulty. You may be given antibiotics.

MEN

Men may have prostate enlargement, which squeezes almost shut the tube from the bladder. See your doctor for ANY urinary symptoms. Retention can lead to infection if you didn't have an infection already.

WOMEN

Because the urethra is so close to (but outside of) the vagina, women are prone to urinary infections after sexual intercourse or even masturbation with fingers or sex toys. Get treated before it becomes a kidney infection.

BOTH MEN and WOMEN

Make sure to drink plenty of fluids every day to prevent infection and urinary stones.

It's either the baby putting pressure on the bladder or you have a UTI and in that case you need help quickly because that can be dangerous to the fetus.
