White Spots on fingernails usually mean an injury to the nail bed, however some people believe it's to do with a zinc or calcium deficiency, which is a myth because it's not just on our hands we grow nails. If you have White Spots on your Toenails as well as your Fingernails then maybe your needing a vitamin supplement. On Fingernails only then most likely cause is an injury.

It could be the normal part of the nail called the lunula.

Some superstition holds that it indicates you have lying (althouhg this has no basis in fact). It can mean several things including that you have been doing certain drugs, or simply that something hit your finger very hard in the mid-recent past.

If you have bumped your toe nail, or have any trahma to the toe nail, it can create white marks as if it were to peel, but not on the end of your nail. This can also happen to your finger nails.

Usually two things: a) you're not getting all the nutrients you need. b) you've gotten a blow to the finger, below the cuticle as the nail was growing out.
