According to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, humans have five basic needs:

  1. Need for Self Actualization which is the ability to direct ones own life, a sense of meaning and fulfillment.
  2. Esteem Needs which are esteem of self and others, achievement recognition, dignity.
  3. Belonging & Love Needs which is the need for love, affection, belonging; need for family and friends.
  4. Safety Needs which are your sense of security, stability, freedom from anxiety and chaos, your need for structure and order.
  5. Physiological Needs which is your need for homeostasis which are specific hungers, food, water, air, shelter, and general survival.

Also they do not have to operate in that order, for example you could be hungry, while all of your other needs are fulfilled.
