Some things are essential for all human life, and some examples are clean drinking water, food and shelter. In Africa, many people depend on a river for their water, but in the hot season, the rivers very often dry up completely. You can't survive for long without water. Some charities are raising money to put wells in African villages. That is a good idea because well water is clean, but when the river has water in it, it is contaminated by faeces and is home to animals such as crocodiles and hippopotamus.

In rural Africa, there are no real shops. The people may depend on a Trading Store which sells everything, but may involve having to walk for a couple of days to get there. If anything is purchased, it has to be carried home, and that will take another couple of days, with the goods getting heavier all the way.

An African's wealth is their livestock, particularly cattle. Money is no use to them in the bush, especially of you remember that they may have to walk for a couple of days to get to the Trading Store, so they rely instead on a system of bartering.

As for shelter, it has to provide a warm place in winter, a cool place in summer and safety from wild animals. The huts are usually built from mud and grass or wattle and daub.

With urbanisation, this way of life is dying out. People have been moving to towns and cities, and in the towns and cities, the factors necessary for survival are the same as they are in any town or city anywhere.
