Mucous tissues produce mucus as a lubricant, to prevent tissues from drying, to cleanse passageways if blocked and to prevent infections by the antiseptic enzymes it contains. Mucous tissues are in the respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, reproductive system and the eyeball has a similar tissue, called vitreous tissue.

It is produced by the mucous tissues in the body where the cold and flu viruses attach to launch their invasion of your body. These tissues line the respiratory tract. When you have a cold, your body tries to wash out the irritant (cold virus) from your sinuses and respiratory tract by producing more than usual mucus as an inflammatory reaction.
