The physical problem that can cause people to fall on stairs is the deteration of the cerebral neucli which is responsible for body patterns such as walking, or running. It's usually seen in people around forty years of age, and its caused by the lack of serotonin which inhibits dopamine. A symptom you should be able to notice is that the person tends to drag his spontaneously.

Your vestibular cortex located in your inner ear helps you to keep balance. It is filled with fluid that moves around as you are in motion. If you spin around, the liquid also spins but make take slightly longer to stop. This is why you may feel dizzy.

However there are other thing that may cause a fall apart from balance. For example an elderly person may fall due to a weaken joint due to Arthritis.

However, althought falls are common in the elderly, they are not normal. The scary statistic is that 50% of all elderlies who have a fall will die within the next year. Therefore it is important to have a full check-up after a fall.
