In an awake person, it would take a severe central nervous system disorder to stop the signal from the brain that makes us all breathe. In a person that is asleep, structures in the nose, mouth, and throat may block the breathing for a short time until the oxygen level in the blood drops and the carbon dioxide builds up in the blood and the person awakens for a few seconds and resumes breathing. This is known as sleep apnea.
