Anorexia nervosa is a compulsion to lose weight coupled with a mild form of delusion that the subject is overweight. The subject will appear thin, perhaps too thin, and still express that he or she is too fat. The subject usually believes that losing weight will bring happiness as opposed to a dieter who believes that loss of excess weight is a step in achieving health.

With "restrictive anorexia," the victim limits the intake of calories by simply not eating. In "purging anorexia," the subject may eat, but purge the calories by vomiting or the use of laxatives and diuretics. Persistant use of induced vomiting in order to purge calories may lead to bulemia, a disorder where vomiting becomes an involuntary reflex to eating.

Symptoms of anorexia include rapid weight loss, trembling, compulsive over-exercise, fixation on calorie counting, refusal to eat over prolonged periods of time, obsessive ritualistic behavior with food (strict self-imposed rules about eating, food cut in a certain way, counting individual peas, etc), lies about the amount of food eaten (either more or less), expressing inaccurate judgment concerning own body image (using words like "gross," "disgusting," "huge," or "fat" when he/she is thin), feeling cold, constantly tired, insomnia, growing fine hair on face on females, irregular or no menstruation, dizziness or fainting, and constipation.

Symptoms of advanced anorexia include emaciation (way too thin), jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes), bleeding or sores around corners of mouth (in purging cases), frailty of bones, severe depression, bulemic reaction to eating, and bruising that won't heal.
