Less than those of a healthy non-smoker (but then many smokers live to a ripe old age!). The major burden on health services is the treatment of 'age-related' conditions. Statistically, smokers die earlier than non-smokers. Several studies have clearly demonstrated that the 'savings' on them dying younger and the resulting decreased costs of treating their 'age-related' conditions outweigh the costs of treating their 'smoking-related' conditions, by over $100, 000.
