The pros are that you will be able to treat Medicare patients. You will be able to accept new older patients and continue to treat current patients as they turn 65 and enroll in Medicare.

The cons are that participating in Medicare forces you to obey a lot of rules and regulations. The strange thing is that many of these rules and regulations apply to your entire practice and so even to patients who are not enrolled in Medicare.

The major con is that Medicare pays poorly. One of their regulations is that you must offer Medicare your lowest fee so they are by definition always the absolute lowest payer. Many offices find that they do not pay enough to cover expenses but they agree to still see the patients despite losing money as a public service. Unfortunately, if the government cuts the fees further, as they are constantly threatening to do, more and more offices will decide they can no longer afford to do this service.
