The hypothalamus senses temperature changes, a thermoreceptors. And a hypothalamic "thermostat" sends signals to increase or decrease temperature. Pyrogens are chemicals that increase the hypothalamic temperature setpoint. And therefore permit fever. some bacterial toxins produce Pyrogens so we get fever when we have bacterial infection.
