Your average gynecology visit includes four stages: 1.) General Exam [check your lungs, pulse, weight, etc.] 2.) Breast Exam 3.) Pelvic Exam 4.) Pap Smear Test The general exam will use tools you've seen before to check your breathing, pulse, ears, and nose. The Breast exam and Pelvic exams are done manually by your gynecologist. All the doctor needs to perform those two are latex gloves and his or her hands. What would be on the tray would be the necessary equipment for the Pap Smear. For this your doctor will use a funny duck billed looking tool called a "Speculum." You can Google that. Speculums can be metal or plastic and come in different sizes. All the speculum does is hold your vagina open. The only other equipment necessary for the Pap is a long Q-tip looking thing. I've heard the Q-tip called by a few different names (swab, brush, spatula) essentially it's just a really long q-tip. The doctor will brush it over the cervix to gather cells and snap the business end off into a test tube. They label the tube and send it to the lab. If you have any further curiousity ask here or just google Pelvic Exam, gynecology, or Pap Smear. There's loads of info out there. http://www.acog.org/publications/patient_education/bp150.cfm
