A mineral is a naturally occurring solid formed through geological processes that has a characteristic chemical composition, a highly ordered atomic structure, and specific physical properties.

They are classified in to classes: The silicate class, the carbonate class, the sulfate class, the halide class, the oxide class, the sulfide class, the phosphate class, the element class, and the organic class.

Examples:

Silicate: aluminum, magnesium, and iron

Carbonate: calcite and aragonite

Sulfate: chromate, gypsum, and selenate

Halide: fluoride, chloride, and bromide

Oxide: chromite, spinel, and rutile

Sulfide: pyrie, chalcopyrite, and pentlandite

Phosphate: phosphorus, antimony and arsenic

Element: gold, silver, copper, graphite, and sulfur

Organic: oxalates, citrates, cyanates, formates
