This is known as insomnia. It can be related to stimulants including caffeinated beverages. It can also be caused by anxiety and intrusive thoughts. In addition, insomnia can be caused by the side effect of certain medications, i.e. Adderall. It is advised to avoid heavy meals prior to sleep, avoid caffeinated beverages after 6 pm, and regulate the sleep habits by going to bed at the same time every night. If these do not help, then one may use over the counter sleeping pills, i.e. Tylenol PM, or prescription medications, i.e. Lunesta.
