What is a diabetic emergency caused by very high blood sugar?
Hypoglycemia is the name of the emergency caused by low blood
sugar. It can result in confusion, unconsciousness, and when
severe, seizures and brain damage. Treatment is giving glucose,
typically in an IV, if unconscious. If the patient is still awake
and is found to have low blood sugar, giving them something sugary
to drink, such as juice, can help prevent them from losing
consciousness.
