I think the person who answered before was on the right track, but I'd like to point out that psychology was a concept for a long while, but only as a formal study for a short, recent time. It was introduced by an experimentalist named Hermann Ebbinghaus.

original answer:

Psychology has been around as a concept for a long time, but only because a science within the past few centuries. The general concept is the past, psychology as a science is the history.

It is my view that psychology is the organized study of the human mind and its mental condition in which a scientific process is used as an approach to gather data that is dependent on bringing pieces of information together, resulting in a tentative explanation which may clarify the facts, and which can be a basis for further investigation of the information gathered, while testing those assumptions which are supported by or characterized as a result of an observation.

According to the Book of Knowledge (1912), in the history of psychology the Ancient Greeks were the first study of the mind and behavior, but there is also evidence of psychological thought dating to the early Egyptians. It was generally regarded as a division of philosophy until 1879, when psychology developed as an independent scientific discipline in Germany and the United States. Psychology borders on a variety of further fields as well as physiology, neuroscience, Artificial Intelligence, sociology, anthropology, along with philosophy and other workings of the humanities.

There were many who influenced modern psychology, in 1890, William James' wrote the Principles of Psychology which rapidly became one of the most significant textbooks in the history of American psychology. It became the fundamental guide for the kinds of questions that American psychologists would consider for years to come. The book's chapters on consciousness, emotion, and habit were predominantly used as an outline for modern pyscology. In 1900 Sigmund Freud published 'Interpretation of Dreams' marking the beginning of Psychoanalytic Thought. (This became one of my favorites during high school) Psychoanalysis has three applications, a manner of investigation of the mind;an arranged set of theories about human behavior; the management of psychological or emotional sickness (The Book of Knowledge 1912).

What does psychology has a long past but a short history mean?

This statement refers to the fact that as a formally defined field psychology has existed for a relatively short period of time, approximately 100 years. However, the questions that psychology tries to investigate (Why do people do what they do? How do we learn? How do we think?) have been posed and investigated for a very long time, basically since humans evolved to become capable of abstract thought and could wonder about themselves. These questions, at various periods of time have been investigated by philosophers, clergy, biologists, seers and artists.
