Yes it can be quite frustrating being in a shoulder spica but it is absolutely necessary to allow proper healing of the injured soft tissues. If not followed it becomes a recurrent problem and also causes damage to shoulder joint in the long run. Though, if its for minor problems like shoulder dislocation without any fractures, one can do a fair bit of ROM exercises along with the elbow to give some physical therapy to the elbow and hand, which are not supposed to be immobilized.
Being in a Double shoulder spica cast isn't that bad its just odd not being able to use your arms or do much of anything for yourself. I have to have some one feed me, bathe me, wipe my feces, change my diaper or catheter, and pretty much every thing else for me. I also have to turn sideways to go thru doors and ride in the middle of the back seat of the car. Thankfully my insurance covers a live in nurse to help me out while Im in my cast. Ive been in for 2 months and will be in for 4 more.
