I have to say this answer is wrong. In the manga (if you people would acutually READ it because they explain stuff better). The deff. of PURE BLOOD is- A person who was born with shinigami powers. This means you only need ONE parent who is a shinigami to have a pureblood- unless they left out info. SO I'm not saying Ichigo's mother was or was not a shinigami, but that is wrong. His mother very well could have been AND PROBABLY WAS a human

From what happened in the anime i think he is special because he might be part human part shinigami because remember when Aizen started saying that he was part human but was cut off by isshin's arival in fake karakura town and since isshin is a shinigami and masaki(Ichigo's mom) is human it is possible.
