MDMA (ecstasy) is not easily classified in the stimulant/hallucinogen/depressant scheme. Primarily, it is a stimulant, though it possesses slight hallucinogenic properties. However, because of its unique effects (causing empathy, openness, etc.) it is properly classified as an entactogen/empathogen.

If I have to pick from 3 categories listed above I'd pick stimulant, as it causes serotonin receptors to fire like crazy and doesn't make you hallucinate. Empathogen category suits MDMA way better though.
