This is one of those things that we don't really know yet.

Dissociatives have been shown to cause certain forms of brain damage. First to come to mind is Olney's lesions. While DXM hasn't received alot of attention for this, it's not to say it's not happening; PCP is being focused on more heavily than DXM.

It's a toss up. The effects of LSD and psilocybin are well documented and less hazardous in my opinion.

Despite how intense dxm may feel, it doesn't carry any real long term consequences. If taken on a daily or almost daily basis then you will start acting kind of tweekish and a few other things but it goes away quickly when you stop. And the reason for feeling like that during regular use is mainly because you're still under it's effects. Now immediate consequences due to overdose are there. An overdose would occur in doses of around 1000mg and up. Lethal overdose could be caused by, hyperthermia, respitory depression, and other factors. The real danger lies in using products containing other ingredients than dxm, always make sure that your product ONLY contains dxm. And since your obviously using it recreationally, try dxm and dph (diphenhydramine, benadryl). Dose your regular dxm plus 200mg+ of dph.

Edit:

This is false. People who use DXM recreationally too often report feeling burnt out for an extended period of time, sometimes years. There's a slight possibility of brain damage. Read well into the part about Olney's lesions. I'm not a naysayer, but bad information is bad information. Get educated.

2nd Edit:

Your information is false, DXM is metabolized too quickly for you to feel it's effects after any extended period of time. Please check into the website above and get educated before you negate what could be important information. Shame shame.
