use twist ties (like those that come in baggies) and gentl tie branches down, to direct them out as well as up. I had a huge garden of giant shrubs at one time doing it this way... Just like you would stake plants in your food garden.

ABSOLUTELY!! The reason is, with a bushy plant you can get more of a yield. With a tall skinny plant you don't really get much of a yield at all.
