No. Xanax is not a narcotic, but Xanax (alprazolam) is a benzodiazepine used for the acute treatment of anxiety or panic attacks. Because of its relatively short half life and rapid onset, there is high abuse potential. It is not a good drug to be on for any prolonged period of time. Xanax should be prescribed according to your physicians instruction. Xanax is meant to be short term (two - six weeks) and gradually reduce the dose according to your doctor! In some cases an individual may have to take Xanax for long periods of time.

Note: Xanax can be addictive. While on Xanax do not come off this benoziazepine 'cold turkey' without seeing your doctor and gradually lowering the dose a little at a time.

Xanax is not a narcotic, opiate, or opioid. It is a benzodiazepine and is listed as a schedule-IV controlled substance (stricter in some states).

It should be noted that benzodiazepines have significantly overlapping side effects with narcotics, and use of one or both without medical supervision could be extremely dangerous.
