Although this drug as medical uses, it is often used as a narcotic. Its affects sedate you and relax your body. It has become a widely used drug along with other cough medicines among our countries use because it is so easily prescribed and obtained.

Promethazine is a first-generation H1 receptor antagonist of the phenothiazine chemical class used medically as an antihistamine. It has a strong sedative effect and in some countries is prescribed for insomnia when benzodiazepines are contraindicated.

That depends on what you mean by "narcotic."

Technically "narcotic" originally meant any drug with sleep-inducing properties. Both promethazine and dextromethorphan, the active ingredients in Promethazine DM, have such properties.

However, "narcotic" is defined in US law in such a way that neither of these substances is considered a narcotic drug.

Narcotics are opiates. Phenergan is a depressant on the nervous system (e.g., Benzodiazipines)
