Enemas are a time-honored, informal health-augmentation procedure -- typically with either a purgative effect in mind, or with a nutrient/nutrition attempt as the goal. Enemas can also be used to modify blood chemistry, in an attempt to keep the blood as near to a pH of 7.365, as possible. The only major concern in an otherwise-healthy colon is a possibility of water intoxication, because the hepatic vein system just inside the anus can 'absorb' aqueous solutions and can dilute the blood chemistry -- especially in infirm individuals. All that being said, Enema Therapy has been administered to patients -- up to every four hours -- for medicinal purposes. More typically, an enema is administered up to once a day, or twice a day, if bowel cleansing is the desired action. Watch out for DIZZINESS or other symptoms of having over-watered the blood stream -- NOT a major danger, but a cautionary note.

With a properly balanced solution, you could do it as often as you wish. However, if that's the only way you pass stool, you're going to come to rely on enemas to have a movement. So it's best to give yourself a break now and again.

If it's electrolytically balanced, (saline,) as long as you like. Holding it gives time for stool to soften. Kind of like soaking dishes in the sink.

I would recommend that you only give yourself an enema if you are constipated and oral laxatives don't give you relief.

Oil retation enema and cleansing enema was ordered how should it be given?

Give the oil rentention enema first. Most oil retention enemas are held for at least 30 minutes to soften the stool. Give the cleansing enema after the retention enema has been held for the required amount of time. Most people will have a bowel movement within a few minutes after being given a cleansing enema.

Please somebody give me an enema that hurts so bad?

An enema should not be painful. If you have had an enema by someone who is not qualified to do so I recomend you visit your doctor a.s.a.p. The only time I'v heard of anyone being in great pain after an enema was due to a bowel perforation.

How often should you take an enema?

Depending on your diagnosis, and why you are using an enema, it can vary. If you have a bowel movement problem, you should talk to your doctor. If not, at maximum once a day. You have to remember that the emptier you are, the less of the solution you will need.
