I think for everyone it has a different importance depending on how it effects them similar to any illness. The significance of depression is it's effect on people and society can be great. Not only does it effect the person that has depression but it can effect the people around that person. For example, a mother may be worried about leaving their son/daughter with depression alone for long periods of time therefor she may feel the need to change her plans accordingly, same for the father, or any family member for that matter. The hard hitter would be that if someone with depression is not worked with or doesn't try to help themselves or get help, could potentially worsen to the point of becoming suicidal and succeed. This would make depression very important in severity because ultimately it can be fatal.
