If you have been rendered unconscious, staying awake is incredibly important. When you are 'knocked out', your brain has basically bashed into your skull. This can cause some very serious problems, that if you should fall asleep, you won't know until you're dead. Bleeding into the dura (i.e. subdural hematoma) can cause brain damage, strokes (from the clots that form, called emboli). Aneurisms could have been caused from your brain striking your skull. It's possible to have torn your dura (but if you had done any of this, you'd not be around to ask the question).
How long to wait? Wait until you've been seen by a physician.
