  • Constipation is defined as having less than three bowel movements per week. In a healthy system, there should be a bowel movement shortly after every meal. As for how long a person can go without a bowel movement and when this becomes life-threatening, that I do not know.
  • Some doctors feel that a person should have at least 2 - 3 bowel movements per day, while others feel once is enough or once to twice every two days. It depends on the individuals diet (lots of fiber and 8 - 8 ounce glasses of water per day) should be taken.
  • If a person is not having a bowel movement by the third or forth day it can be considered 'impacted' and you may have to go to the ER. Eight to 10 days is certainly getting serious and it's almost like a sewer system backing up because your body is not getting rid of toxins.

I don't think that's at all possible. I mean, if we don't have a BM for a couple of days our stomach starts cramping like crazy telling us to let the waste out. It tears you up inside if you ignore it long enough and you can die of toxins being inside your intestines and stuff. Not good. Eating and pooping are essential for good health.

A bowel movement is feces, whether hard from lack of fluid, soft, or runny (diarrhea). A person can feel as if they need to have a bowel movement, but only pass gas. In constipation, a person can feel as if they need to have a bowel movement, but nothing will come out (the person needs more fluids and/or a laxative and fluids).

Another possibility is if a person has had a bowel resection that ends with a stoma (a surgically made opening) on their lower abdomen (between the naval and pelvic bone, but only on one side). This allows soft feces or diarrhea to flow into a bag that is secured over the stoma. The person must remove the bag after it fills, clean the skin, and replace with an unused bag. So in that case, it is possible to have feces move out of the body without passing feces from the colon to rectum and out the anus.

Well you should be defecating once a day. If you don't defecate for a week, you should see a doctor.
