Any situation where the brain is starved of oxygen will cause a person to faint.

For instance the fashion in Victorian times was to for woman to wear tight fitting corsetts. This reduced the amount of oxygen they could assimilate by breathing and therefore could cause fainting quite easily.

It can also occur through overheating of the brain as in sunstroke, heat stroke et.c
