As the name suggests the ball and socket joint is composed of a round knob at the end of one bone that fits into a socket in. An other bone. The ball can. Rotate in the socket to produce a variety of motions. The hips and shoulders are the main examples of this type of joint. Other types of joint allow motion in fewer directions.

Think of your shoulder. your shoulder has almost a cup-shaped end to it where the end of your arm bone can fit in so it can move left, right, up, down... different directions. it is the same thing with your hip.
