best way is to refuse to be apart of it. And the best way to do that is to say in a calm and rational manner try to remove emotion "i'm not going to argue, we should talk later when we're calm" or suggest to write it down if its too difficult to talk about without it resulting in an argument. Just as there anger can make you angry so can your calm make them calm you just have to be persistant. Always try to stay calm, you dont have to agree with them just try to sound reassuring, nothing that can highten the situation, always express that you understand, pause to show your listening (even if they're not) eventually they'll come around. If its because they are just angry about something else they dont feel they can talk about and have picked an argument because they need one, its best to say the same as above and to suggest that they go out for a run or walk to release their pent up energy, and then reapproach the real issue. If they just cant calm down regardless just dont say anything just physically remove yourself from the situation and let them rant to themselves. Once they've got it off their chest they should be calm enough to talk it out instead. In all cases its best to try and spot the esculation so you can stop it from becoming an argument.

Argument is putting forward a point or series of points in a logical way. In a formal sense this is the basis of debate. In formal debate argument should be SExI. S stands for state your point, Ex stands for explain your point and I stands for illustrate. Often a point can have several illustrations and may be statistical. The different points build into a compelling case as to why you are right. This is also the basis for answering any question be it spoken or written on an exam question.
There are lots of different devices that can be employed by people to win arguments. These involve being evasive, like answering a question with another question, humour, which can defuse aggression through to the more sneaky ones my girlfriend uses such as hovering in a doorway whist arguing, making her point and walking off before you can respond. Crying is also quite effective and often employed to win an argument.
Shouting louder is often one of the worst device as is starting the sentence... Your mother is so....
