The surgeon has made a new opening for your intestinal waste. The opening is usually on the right side of your body and located at just below the belt line at or above the waist. A part of the bowel now called a stoma is sewn through the skin and the colostomy bags are designed to be attached over this stoma to collect waste product.
There are one and two piece appliances available. For two piece units, there is a skin barrier which is attached to the skin surrounding the stoma by a bead of adhesive paste along with strong tape. The pouch or collection unit is attached to the Skin barrier. Some appliances are designed to be emptied at the bottom and other designs must be replaced when full.
See related links for more information on colostomy appliances.
Consider there are several reasons the colostomy bag could be leaking. There are seals and devices that you can use together or separately to stop the leaking. Determine the reason it is leaking so you will know which device you need.

colostomy bag. To deficate means via anus ( so says dictionary.com). If you ate and had a colostomy bag, by definition, you wouldn't be able to defecate.
Yes you can. Colostomy bags are waterproof. Although, you should empty your bag before you go in the water.
