You measure using formula that adds up one whole left and right foot steps. And easy way to do that would be to walk normally in some sand or soft ground then measure from the heel of one foot to the heel of the same foot again. If you divide that in half, that should be close to your average stride.

Go to a running track, or a place where there is a measured 100 metres or 100 yards. Walk that length and count your strides. Walk at your normal speed and stride length. Don't be Groucho Marx. Let's say you count 120 strides for 100 yards. Divide 100 by 120. That's about 0.8 of a yard.
