Scabies are a type of mite, also known as the "itch mite." They are related to ticks and lice. You can get them by being in contact with someone else that has them, or by contacting any clothing, bedding, or anything else that is in contact with someone with scabies. They can also be sexually transmitted. There are shampoos and body washes that can kill them, much like head lice.
